Lost Temples of India (BBC)

Tanjore Temple

The highest building in India when it was dedicated in 1010, the Great Temple of Tanjore, in Tamil Nadu, is a World Heritage Site today, but still a living temple.

It was the personal project of the Cholan emperor Rajaraja the Great. It was under his rule that the Cholans conquered the Maldives, the Andamans, and northern Sri Lanka. One of the most creative epochs of Indian culture and art, the Cholan period is often compared in artistic achievement to classical Greece.
